Neuropsych evaluations
A neuropsychological evaluation typically uses a comprehensive battery of tests to help clients understand more about their intellectual ability, processing speed, learning style, memory, attention, social communication, and capacity for other kinds of skills like organization, planning, and self-control (called executive functions).
-
Psychological evaluations
A therapeutic psychological evaluation is more than just a simple screening questionnaire or two. Rather, it provides a deep exploration of patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving that relate to one’s overall mental health, ways of being in relationships, self-concept, core beliefs, and overall adjustment.
For example, rather than just explaining that someone “has anxiety,” this kind of evaluation aims to answer questions about the quality of the anxiety: When and why does it appear? What’s the story behind it?
-
Combined evaluations
As the name implies, a combined evaluation is the best choice for a client who, rather than being an obvious candidate for either a neuropsychological or psychological assessment, would benefit from elements of both.
Humans being the complex creatures that we are, quite a few clients tend to fall into this category!
About Therapeutic Assessment
We base our assessment work on a model called Therapeutic Assessment (TA), in which clients and clinicians collaborate to:
1) identify meaningful questions about the challenges they face
2) explore and understand the answers to these questions through a combination of testing and therapeutic techniques, and
3) develop next-step solutions for what can be done to help.
Sometimes the answers to assessment questions can be summarized and understood as a particular diagnosis (for example: ADHD, learning disability, depression). Sometimes, the explanation might be a little more complex.
Either way, we can help.
